Congregation Beth Israel mourns the loss of Jacquelyn (Jackie) Eve Nudelman, z”l, who passed away on Sept. 7, 2024 at the age of 92.
She was a first generation American, as her father was born in Russia. She grew up around a large family of grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins, all living close by and celebrating the Jewish holidays together and maintaining cultural traditions. Jackie graduated from Garfield HS in Seattle. Following high school, Jackie attended University of Washington. Jackie’s early jobs included working in a bank and then a dental office. Jackie reconnected with fellow Seattle native Burt Nudelman, who was living in Stockton, CA. They married on August 18th, 1957. They stayed in California until right after their first son Joel was born in 1960, then moved to Portland that same year. They were part of the opening of the largest shopping mall in the world at that time…The Lloyd Center, where Burt managed the Zukors clothing store. Being closer to their Seattle and Portland families ensured that Portland would be home for the rest of their lives. In 1968, son number two, Jim, was born. Raising her sons with Burt was the highlight of her life and what she found most purposeful and joyful. In 1974, Jackie assisted Burt in opening their first store at the Lloyd Center called J. Burton, a clothing store specializing in large sizes. They eventually grew their business to seven stores in three states. After selling their stores in 1985, Jackie helped Burt in opening Nudelman and Associates Retail Management Consultants. Jackie assisted Burt on projects and travelled with him extensively to work with a variety of retail clients.
She loved playing tennis and running into her 60’s, when she began aerobics and other types of group fitness. She was a regular at the Southwest Community Center at Gabriel Park, right up until March 2020, when the facility closed due to COVID. She loved the social aspect of her sports and met so many good friends that way.Jackie volunteered at the Raleigh Hills Senior Center. She was also a volunteer with the SMART reading program at Hayhurst Elementary School, where she read with kids every week.
Even in her final years, Jackie was sharp, had a good sense of humor and kept up on the events of the world. She had strong opinions on many topics, and it was difficult to change her mind. She will be dearly missed by her family and friends and will be remembered for her sense of humor and genuine interest in the lives of the people around her.
Jackie is survived by Joel and Elizabeth Nudelman; Jim Nudelman and Cindy Radler; nieces and nephews, Janice, Laurel, Ed and Star and their spouses and children.
Jackie was preceded in death by her father, Louis Woron, z”l; mother, Ruth (Pearl) Woron, z”l, and her brother, Paul Woron, z”l.
The funeral was held at Congregation Beth Israel Monday, Sept. 16.
Donations in Jackie's memory can be directed to Congregation Beth Israel, Cedar Sinai Park Foundation and SMART Reading.
