The Complexity of Jewish Identity: A Minority Identity in a Dominant Culture is a free online workshop designed for specifically for Jewish educators teaching students in grades 6-10. Discover a new Facing History unit of three lessons that investigate how to use the stories of Hanukkah, Purim, and Passover to frame an exploration of individual Jewish identity and Jewish diversity around the world, centering Mizrai, Sephardic, and Jews of Color identities. In this participatory workshop, attendees will engage in selected activities from this curriculum to explore how students can both express and learn about the complexity of Jewish identity. We will highlight and appreciate Jewish voices that offer insight into the multitude of ways that Jews maintain a minority identity within a dominant culture. We will also examine how teaching about and celebrating the complexity of Jewish identity can be a successful strategy in combatting all forms of hatred and bigotry.
