A Vigil for the anniversary of October 7: Y’hi Or, Let there be light
On October 7 2023, a Shabbat which was also Simkhat Torah 5784, Jewish holiday joy was turned into horror and mourning. In a surprise attack, Hamas killed over 1200 Israeli children and adults. In the three hundred and more days since, Israel has attacked Gaza in response, killing over 39,000 Palestinian children and adults.
As we mark one year since the massacre began, we as Jews gather to mourn: the loss of life and, as well, the loss of the light of hope in our lives that peace was and is imminently possible. We gather to help each other bear the sorrow, and hold each other’s hands as we seek to rekindle that light.
