Then you need to check out the Chanukah Wonderland.
Chabad Northeast Portland is putting on Portland's 3rd Annual Chanukah Wonderland, icy menorah – and the science behind it -- included. Chabad Northeast Portland offers its 3rd annual Chanukah Wonderland, this year with Mad Science on hand and a menorah fashioned entirely from ice. Kosher nosh, of course, as a Judah Maccabee for photo ops.
Billed as Portland's premier Chanukah event, the Wonderland is set for the fifth day of the Festival of Lights, on Sun., Dec. 21. The explosive afternoon runs from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., at Beverly Cleary School, 1915 N.E. 33rd Ave. The cost is $5 per person; prepaid family discounts are available online. No reservations required.
A fun annual event in most major cities across the country, Chanukah Wonderland always is a big hit here, too, with something for kids of all ages (and their folks, as well). The activities include Chanukah arts and crafts, a toddler playzone, making dreidles out of clay, and a modern day Judah Maccabee to for photo ops. There also will be kosher nosh, at reasonable prices, of course.
"After this event’s success the past two years here in Portland, we decided to step it up this December," says Rabbi Chaim Wilhelm, director of Chabad Northeast Portland.
"Responding to demand, we’ve lengthened the event, and Mad Science will be on hand to run a special Chanukah Show.” It’s at 2:30 p.m.
What about that chilly menorah? “Everyone should stick around to watch us carve out and light Portland's first ever Ice Menorah,” Wilhelm says. It will be 5’ tall and made completely of ice. “The crowd will keep you warm,” he adds.
